  • Rather Ripped ends up being of a piece with their previous two albums, and often plays like a stripped-down, slightly less-inspired Sonic Nurse. Once again, Kim Gordon contributes some of the best tracks here; "Reena" and "Jams Run Free" are equal parts dreamy and driving, while "The Neutral" is a sweet, low-key love song.
  • This is a fine companion disc to the great recent albums Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped. Its mostly guitarscapes, compelling and weirdly beautiful, with the great Kim Gordon vocal track Blink. Essential for Sonic Youth fans and probably a great way to discover the group. I particularly like Fire Engine Dream and Blink, but the whole disc is /5(8).

  • Rather Ripped is a little more straight forward than some of their previous works which makes it a bit more accessible but if you are a fan of the avant-garde stuff don't let this review scare you away. This album is far from mainstream. 5 Stars. by wallstwhiz Aug 13,

  • Jun 12,  · But while this is Da Yoof at their most palatable, it’s also one of their most unsettling records to date; Rather Ripped is a melancholic weepy of an album with loads of lyrics about adultery (“Sleepin Around”) and sexual frustration (“What A Waste”).
  • Considering that Sonic Youth lost Jim O'Rourke and found the custom-tweaked, irreplaceable guitars that were stolen in before heading into the studio to make Rather Ripped, it seemed that the album could be a big departure from what they'd been doing on Murray Street and Sonic Nurse -- possibly a return to the kind of music they could only make with those instruments, or perhaps an entirely 8/
